What Is Kief? How to Collect It With a 4-Piece Grinder

What is kief?
Kief is the fine, golden powder made of trichomes, the tiny crystal-like glands on the surface of cannabis flower. Trichomes are where most of the THC and terpenes in weed are made. When you use a 4-piece grinder, a fine mesh screen lets these trichomes fall into the bottom chamber, called the kief catcher, where they build up over time.
- Also called pollen, keef or dry sift.
- Much higher in THC than the flower it came from, so people use it in small amounts.
- You need a grinder with a screen and a bottom chamber to collect it.
What Kief Is Made Of
Look closely at a good cannabis bud and you’ll see it sparkle. That frosty coating is made of trichomes: tiny, mushroom-shaped glands that hold most of the plant’s THC, CBD and terpenes. When flower is ground, some of these trichomes break off. Collected together, they make kief.
TrichomesTiny crystal-like glands that coat the surface of flower.
ColorPale gold or tan when pure; greener when plant matter is mixed in.
TextureA fine, dusty powder that gets sticky when warm.
ConcentratedMore concentrated than flower, so a little goes a long way.
Other namesPollen, keef, dry sift. Grinder makers often say “pollen catcher.”
Legal statusTreated like the plant it comes from: only legal where state law allows.
How a 4-Piece Grinder Collects Kief
A 4-piece grinder has four parts that screw together. The magic happens at the screen: ground herb stays on top, and only the finest trichomes fall through into the kief catcher.
How to Collect More (and Cleaner) Kief
Do
- Use a 4-piece grinder with a fine screen
- Brush the screen now and then so it doesn’t clog
- Let kief build up over a few weeks
- Chill the grinder for a few minutes before scraping
- Use the included scraper with a light touch
- Store kief in a small airtight glass jar
Avoid
- The “coin trick”: a coin rattling inside can scratch or tear the screen
- Scraping hard with metal tools
- Overfilling the grinding chamber
- Leaving the grinder somewhere hot
- Letting resin build up on the screen
Kief vs Hash vs Rosin
| What it is | How it’s made | |
|---|---|---|
| Kief | Loose trichome powder | Sifted through a screen, often in a grinder |
| Hash | Kief in solid form | Kief pressed together into a solid piece |
| Rosin | A sticky, solventless concentrate | Flower or hash pressed with heat and pressure |

Kief FAQ
What is kief made of?
Kief is made of trichomes, the tiny crystal-like glands that cover the surface of flower. They hold most of the plant’s aroma and active compounds, which is why kief is more concentrated than the flower it came from.
What does kief look like?
Kief is a fine, dusty powder. Pure kief is pale gold or tan. The greener it looks, the more bits of plant matter are mixed in.
Is kief the same as pollen?
People often call kief “pollen,” and grinder makers use both words, but kief is not actually pollen. It is made of trichomes. Other common names are keef and dry sift.
Does kief have more THC than weed?
Yes. Kief is made almost entirely of trichomes, where THC is produced, so it is usually much higher in THC than the bud it came from. Start with a small pinch.
Is kief better than flower?
Kief is more concentrated, so people use it in small amounts. Many like to save it and add a pinch to a bowl now and then. Whether it is “better” comes down to personal preference.
How long does it take to collect kief?
It depends on how often you grind and on the flower itself. With a 4-piece grinder and regular use, most people see a useful amount after a few weeks.
How do you get kief out of a grinder?
Unscrew the bottom chamber and use the scraper that came with your grinder to gently gather the kief into one spot. Scrape the screen lightly too. Chilling the grinder for a few minutes first makes kief less sticky and easier to collect.
What is the difference between kief and hash?
Kief is loose trichome powder. Hash is kief that has been pressed together into a solid piece.
Can you vaporize kief?
Yes. Add a small pinch on top of ground herb in a dry herb vaporizer. If your vaporizer has dosing capsules or a concentrate pad, use them, because loose kief can slip through screens and clog the airpath.
How should I store kief?
Keep it in a small airtight glass container, away from heat and light. A cool, dark place keeps it fresh longer.
Why isn’t my grinder collecting kief?
Two and three-piece grinders usually have no screen, so they cannot collect kief. If you have a 4-piece, the screen may be clogged: brush it clean. Very dry or very fresh flower can also release less.
Does the Santa Cruz Shredder have a kief catcher?
Yes. The 4-piece Santa Cruz Shredder has a T304 stainless steel screen that lets only fine trichomes fall through into the bottom chamber, plus a pollen scraper for collecting it.
Is kief legal?
Kief is generally treated the same way as the plant it comes from, so it is only legal where state law allows. Check your local laws.
