Wax Pens & Dab Pens: The Best Picks and How to Choose

A wax pen, also called a dab pen, is a pocket-size vaporizer for concentrates like wax, shatter and live resin. Below are the pens we recommend in every price range, with live USD prices, plus everything you need to choose, use and care for one.

City Vaporizer has sold vaporizers since 2012. Our picks are based on the specs of every pen we carry and on what our own team actually uses day to day.

Key takeaways

  • Wax pen and dab pen mean the same thing: a portable vaporizer for concentrates.
  • The heating element matters most for flavor. Ceramic, coil-less and convection designs taste cleaner; quartz coils hit harder and heat fast.
  • Adjustable heat is worth it. Low heat means more flavor; high heat means bigger clouds.
  • Want carts too? Pick a pen that also takes 510 cartridges.

Who should buy what

  • First pen, small budget: Yocan Evolve Plus or Dr. Dabber Light.
  • Best all-rounder: Dr. Dabber Ghost 2.
  • Maximum portability: Puffco Pivot.
  • At home, maximum control: Focus V AERIS.
  • Dab straight from the jar: Lookah Seahorse Pro Plus.

Quick Picks: Best Wax Pens and Dab Pens

Short on time? These are our top choices by category. Every price is live in USD.

What Our Team Actually Uses

We asked the two people at City Vaporizer who have spent the most time with these devices which pens they reach for themselves.

Nelson · Vaporizer Specialist

Dr. Dabber Ghost 2 and Puffco Pivot

Nelson loves both and alternates between them. The Ghost 2 is his pick for flavor and temperature control, and the Puffco Pivot wins on portability: it fits easily into his clothing when he is walking around.

Jacob · Founder

Focus V AERIS and Dr. Dabber Stella

Jacob favors the Focus V AERIS. It is very reliable, but on the larger side, so he keeps one in the den next to the sofa. For on the go, he likes the Dr. Dabber Stella because it is so discreet.

The Best Wax Pens and Dab Pens, Reviewed

01
Best Dab Pen Overall · Best Under $100

Dr. Dabber Ghost 2

$97.95 USDPrice checked September 27, 2026

Best for: Flavor-first dabbers who want real temperature control in a pocket-size pen

Ceramic sidewall heating5 settings, 420–540°F3 heat profilesUSB-C pass-throughHeats in 5–10 s

The Ghost 2 is the pen we point most people to first. Instead of a coil sitting in your wax, it heats the chamber from the sides with 360° radial sidewall heating and an all-ceramic vapor path, which is a big part of why it tastes so clean.

You get five settings from 420°F to 540°F, plus three heat profiles (Ascent, Steady and Descent) that change how the temperature moves during a session. It heats in about 5–10 seconds, charges over USB-C with pass-through, and is rated for up to 20 sessions per charge in a 3.5 x 1.7 inch, 7 oz body.

Pros

  • Ceramic sidewall heating for clean flavor
  • Precise settings plus heat profiles
  • Pass-through charging
  • 1-year warranty on battery, charger and electrical parts

Keep in mind

  • Concentrates only, not for dry herb or e-juice
  • Chunkier than a slim stick pen

Team pick: this is one of the two pens Nelson, our vaporizer specialist, alternates between.

Best Pocket E-Rig

Puffco Pivot

$129.95 USDPrice checked September 27, 2026

Best for: Puffco fans who want e-rig style hits in something that disappears into a pocket

Ceramic 3D Chamber4 heat settings + BoostReal-time temp controlHaptic feedbackAbout 15 dabs per charge

The Pivot brings Puffco’s 3D Chamber into a pen-sized device. The quick-release ceramic chamber heats with real-time temperature control, you choose from four heat settings, and Boost gives you a hotter, longer hit when you want it.

Haptic feedback tells you when it is ready, a light bar shows status, and there is a lock so it does not fire in your bag. Puffco rates it at about 15 dabs per charge over USB-C. Want water filtration? The Pivot Glass Adapter ($57.99) is sold separately.

Pros

  • Puffco 3D Chamber flavor in a pen
  • Boost and real-time temperature control
  • Small enough to carry everywhere

Keep in mind

  • Fewer dabs per charge than larger rigs
  • Glass adapter sold separately

Team pick: Nelson’s other daily pen. He loves the Pivot for portability because it slips into his clothing when he is walking around.

Best Premium Portable E-Rig

Focus V AERIS

$159.95 USDPrice checked September 27, 2026

Best for: Serious dabbers who want app-level control and don’t mind a bigger device

Intelli-Core convection atomizer365–600°F in the app5 presets, 425–525°FSwappable batteryUSB-C + wireless charging

The AERIS sits between a dab pen and a full electric dab rig. Its Intelli-Core atomizer uses convection heating, and through the app you can set temperatures from 365°F to 600°F (185–315°C), or use the five presets from 425°F to 525°F.

It heats in under 60 seconds, uses a swappable battery, and charges over USB-C with pass-through or wirelessly. Haptics, RGB lighting, a magnetic mouthpiece and an optional bubbler round it out. It is bigger than everything else on this list, which is the trade-off for that level of control.

Pros

  • Convection heating with precise app control
  • Swappable battery and wireless charging
  • Optional bubbler for water filtration

Keep in mind

  • Much larger than a pen
  • Premium price

Team pick: Jacob, our founder, favors the AERIS. It has been very reliable for him, but it is on the larger side, so it lives in his den next to the sofa.

Best Discreet Dab Pen

Dr. Dabber Stella

$89.99 USDPrice checked September 27, 2026

Best for: On-the-go dabbers who want a slim, low-profile pen with a wide temperature range

TCR floating coil4 settings, 460–775°FVortex airflowUSB-C pass-through

The Stella keeps a slim, low-key profile that does not look like much in your hand. Inside, a TCR (temperature coefficient of resistance) “floating coil” sits in a floating chamber, and four settings run from 460°F to 775°F, so you can go low for flavor or high for bigger clouds.

Vortex airflow and USB-C pass-through charging make it an easy everyday carry. Note that the battery is for its own atomizer only; it does not take 510 cartridges.

Pros

  • Slim and discreet
  • Wide 460–775°F range
  • Pass-through charging

Keep in mind

  • Does not take 510 carts

Team pick: Jacob’s pick for on the go, because of how discreet it is.

Best for: People who switch between wax and 510 cartridges

Coil-less ceramic bowl2.7 / 3.2 / 3.7V520mAhHeats in about 5 sSesh mode

The Puffco Plus uses a coil-less ceramic bowl, so your wax never touches a bare coil, and three voltage settings (2.7V, 3.2V and 3.7V). It heats in about 5 seconds.

Sesh mode gives you about 30 sessions per charge (or 90–120 minutes of continuous use), and the included Dart tool makes loading easy. The battery also works with 510 cartridges, which makes it a handy two-in-one.

Pros

  • Coil-less ceramic bowl

Heating Elements Explained

The heating element, or atomizer, is the single biggest factor in how a dab pen tastes and hits.

Quartz coilHeats fast and hits hard. Can run hot, so start on a low setting. Examples: Yocan Evolve Plus, Lookah Ant.
CeramicHeats more evenly for smoother, more flavorful vapor. Examples: OOZE Duplex 2.0, Yocan Cylo.
Coil-lessYour wax sits in a cup or bowl instead of on a coil, for cleaner flavor. Examples: Yocan Orbit, New Puffco Plus.
TitaniumDurable and simple. Example: Dr. Dabber Light.
Chamber and convectionE-rig style heating for the best flavor. Examples: Ghost 2 (ceramic sidewall), Puffco Pivot (3D Chamber), Focus V AERIS (convection).
Nectar tipA heated quartz or ceramic tip you touch to your concentrate. Example: Lookah Seahorse Pro Plus.

Wax Pen vs Dab Pen vs Vape Pen

Wax pen vs dab pen: there is no real difference. They are two names for the same device, a portable vaporizer you load with concentrates.

Dab pen vs vape pen: this is the difference that matters. A dab pen is loaded by hand with solid concentrates. A vape pen usually means a 510-thread battery that screws onto a pre-filled oil cartridge, with nothing to load or clean.

Can you put wax in a vape pen? Not in a standard oil cartridge. You need an atomizer built for concentrates. If you want both in one device, choose a pen that also takes 510 carts, such as the New Puffco Plus, OOZE Duplex 2.0 or Lookah Seahorse Pro Plus, or add a wax atomizer to a 510 battery.

How to Choose a Wax Pen

  1. Decide what you will use it for. Wax only, wax and carts, or dabbing from the jar? That points you to a wax pen, a cart-compatible pen or a nectar collector.
  2. Pick a heating element. Want flavor? Choose ceramic, coil-less or chamber heating. Want big hits fast? Quartz.
  3. Look for adjustable heat. Even three voltage settings make a big difference. Exact temperatures, like the Ghost 2’s 420–540°F range, are better still.
  4. Check the battery and charging. USB-C and pass-through charging are worth having. Bigger batteries (such as the Yocan Orbit’s 1700mAh) mean fewer charges.
  5. Think about size. A slim pen like the Stella is easy to carry discreetly; a larger device like the AERIS gives you more control at home.
  6. Consider upkeep. Coil pens need replacement coils over time. Coil-less and chamber designs are usually easier to keep tasting clean.

How to Use a Wax Pen

1. Charge itFully charge before first use. Most newer pens use USB-C.
2. Load a small amountUse a dab tool (or a heated loading tool like the Puffco Hot Knife) to place a rice-grain-size dab in the atomizer.
3. Start on lowChoose the lowest heat or voltage setting first for the best flavor.
4. Heat and inhale slowlyPress the button (or start a session) and take a slow, steady draw.
5. AdjustTurn up the heat only if you want more vapor.
6. Wipe after useOnce cool, swab leftover residue so the next session tastes clean.

Using a nectar collector instead? Heat the tip, touch it to your concentrate in a heat-safe dish, and inhale as it vaporizes. No loading needed.

Cleaning and Coil Care

  • Let it cool first, then remove the atomizer or chamber.
  • Swab with isopropyl alcohol. Wipe residue from the atomizer and mouthpiece with a cotton swab dipped in isopropyl alcohol.
  • Keep liquid off the battery connection, and let every part dry completely before reassembling.
  • Replace coils when flavor fades. Coils are wear items; Yocan, for example, suggests replacing Evolve Plus XL coils every 4 to 6 weeks.
  • Follow your manual. Some atomizers should not be soaked. Have a Puffco? See our guide on how to clean a Puffco Peak.

Wax Pen Batteries and 510 Options

Most wax pens come with their own battery. If you want a separate battery for carts and wax atomizers, look for adjustable voltage, USB-C and pass-through charging.

Traveling With a Dab Pen

According to the TSA, electronic vaping devices are allowed in carry-on bags only, not in checked bags. You must take steps to stop the heating element from turning on by accident, such as using your pen’s lock, and lithium-ion batteries must be 100 Wh or less. Check with your airline for any limits on the number of devices.

The TSA also notes that its officers do not search for illegal drugs, but will refer anything illegal they find to law enforcement. Cannabis is still illegal under federal law, so check the rules for your airline and destination before you fly.

Wax Pen and Dab Pen FAQ

What is a wax pen?

A wax pen is a small, battery-powered vaporizer made for cannabis concentrates such as wax, shatter, budder and live resin. You place a small amount of concentrate in the heating chamber (the atomizer), press the button, and the pen heats it into vapor without burning it.

Is a wax pen the same as a dab pen?

Yes. Wax pen, dab pen and concentrate pen are different names for the same kind of device: a portable pen that vaporizes concentrates. Some brands use one name or the other, but they work the same way.

What is the difference between a dab pen and a vape pen?

A dab pen (wax pen) is loaded by hand with solid concentrates like wax or shatter. A vape pen usually means a 510-thread battery that screws onto a pre-filled oil cartridge. Some devices, such as the New Puffco Plus, OOZE Duplex 2.0 and Lookah Seahorse models, can do both.

Can you put wax in a regular vape pen?

Not in a standard oil cartridge. Wax needs an atomizer built for concentrates. If you already have a 510 battery, a refillable wax tank or atomizer can convert it, like the tank included with the RYOT VERB 710 FLIP.

What is the best wax pen?

For most people we recommend the Dr. Dabber Ghost 2 for its ceramic sidewall heating and exact temperature settings. For the most portable option, the Puffco Pivot. For the most control, the Focus V AERIS. On a budget, the Yocan Evolve Plus.

How much is a dab pen?

Simple wax pens start around the price of the Yocan Evolve Plus ($25.23). Mid-range pens with voltage settings and better atomizers cost more, and premium pocket e-rigs like the Puffco Pivot ($129.95) and Focus V AERIS ($159.95) sit at the top. Prices on this page are live USD prices.

How do you use a wax pen?

Charge it, then load a small amount of concentrate (about the size of a grain of rice) into the atomizer with a dab tool. Replace the cap, choose the lowest heat setting, press the button to heat and inhale slowly. Increase the heat only if you need more vapor.

How long does a wax pen hit last?

Most wax pens heat for as long as you hold the button, and many have a safety cutoff of about 10 to 15 seconds. Pens with a session mode, like the Puffco Plus or Lookah Seahorse Pro Plus, heat for a set cycle. A single small load usually lasts a few draws.

Is a wax pen better than a vape?

It depends on what you use. A wax pen gives you more control over which concentrate you use and how much you load, while a cartridge vape is more convenient because there is nothing to load or clean. If you want both, choose a pen that also takes 510 carts.

What is the best heating element for a wax pen?

Ceramic and coil-less designs are known for flavor, quartz heats quickly for bigger hits, and titanium is durable. Premium devices like the Ghost 2 (ceramic sidewall), Puffco Pivot (ceramic 3D Chamber) and Focus V AERIS (convection) avoid putting wax directly on a bare coil.

How long do wax pen coils last?

It depends on how often you dab and how hot you run it. Yocan, for example, suggests replacing Evolve Plus XL coils every 4 to 6 weeks. Replace a coil when flavor turns burnt or the pen stops heating evenly.

How do I clean a wax pen?

Let the pen cool, remove the atomizer, and wipe residue with a cotton swab dipped in isopropyl alcohol. Let everything dry completely before reassembling, and keep liquid away from the battery connection. Always follow your pen’s manual, since some atomizers should not be soaked.

Can you bring a dab pen on a plane?

According to the TSA, electronic vaping devices are allowed only in carry-on bags, not checked bags, and you must take steps to prevent the heating element from turning on (such as using the lock). Lithium-ion batteries must be 100 Wh or less. TSA officers do not search for drugs, but if they find an illegal substance they refer it to law enforcement, and cannabis remains illegal under federal law. Check your airline and the laws at your destination.

Where can I buy a dab pen near me?

Instead of hunting through local shops, you can order online from City Vaporizer. We have sold vaporizers since 2012, carry brands like Puffco, Dr. Dabber, Focus V, Lookah, OOZE and Yocan, and every price on this page is a live USD price.

What wax pen battery should I get?

Most wax pens come with a dedicated battery. If you want a separate battery for 510 carts and wax atomizers, look for adjustable voltage and USB-C charging, like the Lookah Egg (five voltages from 2.4V to 4.0V) or the RYOT VERB 710 FLIP, which includes a refillable wax tank.

What temperature should I dab at in a wax pen?

Start low. Lower temperatures bring out more flavor and smoother vapor, while higher temperatures produce bigger clouds. On voltage-based pens, begin at the lowest voltage and work up. On pens with exact temperatures, such as the Ghost 2 (420–540°F), start at the bottom of the range.
